Crossfire Hurricane Movie Review

Crossfire Hurricane
Releases: 28thNovember 2012
Rating: M – Contains drug use & offensive language
Duration: 111 minutes
Genre:  Documentary
Starring: Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and Charlie Watts
Director: Brett Morgen (The Kid Stays In The Picture)
Reviewer: Jon E Clist
The Premise>> The Rolling Stones are to be chronicled in a kaleidoscopic new film, Crossfire Hurricane, that documents key periods of their career and their incredible adventures. The film will be broadcast live by satellite to cinemas from the London Film Festival on Thursday 18 October and include live coverage from the red carpet before the film screening begins. Directed by Brett Morgen, the film features historical footage, much of it widely unseen, and commentary from Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts, Ronnie Wood and former Stones Bill Wyman and Mick Taylor, as well as rare interviews with Brian Jones. Period interviews, extensive live performance material and news archive footage will complete the documentary, which takes its title from the opening lines of “Jumping Jack Flash”.
The Review>> So if you were going to make a list of the most influential rock bands of the past fifty years, I am pretty sure that The Rolling Stones would find their way onto most people’s lists and for the most part end up towards the top of said lists. Then if you took those lists and converted them to a Ven diagram and cross referenced it with the total volume of drugs taken during the sixties and seventies, you would find that both circles would be heavily ensconced within each other. That Ven diagram would pretty much sum up this rock documentary perfectly and it would be known forever as the sex, drugs and rocknroll ven diagram.
So here we have a brilliant collection of clips from predominately the first 2 decades of the fifty years of their illustrious musical journey. I think that for me, I didn’t want this documentary to go longer but then I would have liked to have seen perhaps a little more of the eighties leading into the nineties as they journeyed supposedly into chemically sober rockn’roll. So you don’t get to the point where Bill Wyman left the band, however it does cover the rest of the comings and goings including the departure and death of founding member Brian Jones. You get a lot of insight into the rock machine that is The Rolling Stones and there is this very interesting format involved in the editing of this documentary. The bulk of the audio/narration comes from a interview done on the eve of the 50th anniversary of the Stones. No cameras were allowed in the room so it is purely dialog that flows over top of archival footage. This works very well as you don’t get distracted looking at the wrinkly faces of the Stones as they are now. Instead it visually focuses on them in their youth.
However each member of the band both current and previous that are still alive, feature in the interviews. So you get to hear some great insight from past members such as Bill Wyman and Mick Taylor. For the most part they certainly appear to be given the freedom to talk about whatever they like, even though it is public knowledge that Mick Jagger had final sign off on every scene and audio clip used in the film. In fact to be honest there were plenty of scenes throughout the film that you get the feeling Jagger was feeling rather open about including. You also get to see just how shrewd a businessman Jagger really is. After all he has managed to keep the business of The Rolling Stones alive for five decades now.
The Verdict>> An intriguing rock-umentary that gives a lot of credence and evidence to the legends of a band so fueled by chemical additives and the desire to have fun in the process of making music for the masses of dis-affected youth.
Some extra bits to know about the film and to look out for>> With one hotly-anticipated Rolling Stones documentary under his belt, director Brett Morgen already has another rock legend on his mind: Kurt Cobain. For Nirvana devotees, this is awesome news. Crossfire Hurricane has been getting good reviews, which bodes well for a Cobain documentary. But because Courtney Love is involved in this movie (she actually recruited him for the project back in 2007, according to Morgen) this isn’t going to be your run-of-the-mill life story.
“We are going to do the movie sort of like a third-person autobiography,” Morgen told the New York Post. “[As] if Kurt was around and making a film about his life.” And while we have no idea what that means, we’re not letting it dampen our hopes for this potentially illuminating project. Even though Morgen has spoken all of 100 words about the project thus far, he’s already demonstrated a reassuring familiarity with the subject matter. “Kurt was not only an amazing songwriter and musician: He was an incredible artist and filmmaker,” Morgen said. In case you didn’t know, Cobain used to make Super-8 movies in his spare time. Which isn’t a secret, but it’s a lesser-known bit of trivia that indicates Morgen’s done his research.

The Dark Knight Rises DVD Review

The Dark Knight Rises
Releases: 19th July 2012
Rating: M – Contains Violence
Duration: 164 minutes
Genre:  SciFi Action
Starring: Tom Hardy, Anne Hathaway, Christian Bale, Michael Cain, Morgan Freeman, Marion Cotillard and Joseph Gordon-Levitt
Director: Christopher Nolan (Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, Inception, Memento)
Reviewer: Jon E Clist

Special Features>>  Over three hours of bonus features including The Batmobile- A comphrensive look at the gadgets and vehicles of Batman. Ending The Knight-  Creating the epic conclusion.

The Premise>> Eight years on, a new terrorist leader, Bane, overwhelms Gotham’s finest, and the Dark Knight resurfaces to protect a city that has branded him an enemy.

The Review>> I am not sure that I could name a film in cinematic history that has such a huge level of expectation associated with it before it was even released. Perhaps due to the untimely death of Heath Ledger, it’s predecessor The Dark Knight certainly built a huge level of hype based around his performance. However after Christopher Nolan delighted and dazzled us with that film we have all been warming to boiling point with the excited wonder of ‘what will he do now to bring a climactic end to his time on the Batman franchise?’

It is now over an hour since I left the cinema and I am still kind of at a loss for words to describe this film. I know that I really don’t want to go into great detail about the storyline, as I firmly believe this is a film worth seeing on the big screen and experiencing as many of its nuances and twists for yourself. So here it is, my thoughts without plot specifics or spoilers.

Firstly, I cannot fault any of the character or actors involved in this story. Each and every one of the team involved have portrayed their roles to perfection, right down to the level of emotion and even in the case of Bane, right down to the lack of emotion. Desperation and pain abounds as the protagonists are thrown through a gambit of loss and suffering. I know a lot of people seemed to wonder if Anne Hathaway could do justice to the character of Cat Woman. In fact there are a lot of people who even wanted to refuse to give a chance after the successful performances that were done by Michelle Pfeiffer in the past. Sorry Michelle, but despite the wonderful job you have done in the past, you have been beaten by perfection in leather by Hathaway.

Visually this film is mind-blowingly amazing to watch. The Dark Knight Rises features over an hour of footage shot in IMAX (by comparison, The Dark Knight contained 28 minutes) So watching it come to life on the very big Imax screen, is awesome. Of course if you aren’t near the Imax theatre in Auckland, the majority if screens in New Zealand are digital and you certainly experience something rather amazing at pretty much all locations. Nolan has obviously put a lot of time and thought into each element of this cinematic experience and it’s 164 minutes has no downtime, but instead an intense collection of action, drama, twists and turns, stunts, gadgets and so much more.

The Verdict>> My favourite film of all time, 6 stars out of 5 beyond all doubts and I will be watching this film again multiple times.

Some extra bits to know about the film and to look out for>> Christopher Nolan is the first director to complete a full trilogy of Batman films, but the second to direct a full trilogy of films on one superhero (after Sam Raimi completed his Spider-Man films).

Christian Bale has stated that he would not play Batman if Robin appeared anywhere in the trilogy. Christopher Nolan agreed not to include Robin as it would undermine the dark tone of his series.

Christian Bale is the first live action actor to portray Batman/Bruce Wayne in three Batman films. Kevin Conroy has played the character in seven animated films as of 2011 (including Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker).

Cinematographer Wally Pfister has expressed interest in shooting the entirety of the film in the IMAX format, as both Pfister and Christopher Nolan have expressed distaste for shooting the film in 3-D. Ultimately, the film would feature approximately 50 minutes of IMAX footage, while the rest was shot in a combination of 35mm and 70mm, as IMAX cameras proved to be too noisy for shooting the films dialogue scenes.

According to Gary Oldman, Christopher Nolan told the actors the ending of the film verbally to avoid any leaks.

One of the reasons why Christopher Nolan cast Tom Hardy as Bane was because of his performance in the film RocknRolla. Hardy stated that he thought he was cast because of his role in Bronson. He arrived on set only to learn that Nolan has never even seen Bronson.

Around 10,000 extras were used to shoot the Gotham Rogues scene in Heinz Field. Some of the Pittsburgh Steelers played football players, including Hines Ward, who played himself.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Anne Hathaway’s stunt double broke one of the IMAX cameras when she crashed the Batpod into it. This marks the second time an IMAX camera has been destroyed on a Christopher Nolan Batman film – a previous camera was smashed when filming the Joker’s underground truck chase in The Dark Knight.

The Premise>> Set in Scotland in a rugged and mythical time, “Brave” features Merida, an aspiring archer and impetuous daughter of royalty. Merida makes a reckless choice that unleashes unintended peril and forces her to spring into action to set things right.

The Review>> Let me begin by saying, the team at Pixar have outdone themselves again, following in the success of Cars 2 and Toy Story 3.

Brave’s animation is just stunning; from the detailed forest and castle settings right down to the fall and swish of young Merida’s mane of fiery red Scottish hair.

Merida’s character is one that young girls, particularly tweens, will relate to.  She’s fierce and feisty and dances to the beat of her own drum (aka, is passionate, headstrong and full of hopes and dreams for her future).

When her hopes and dreams are threatened by an imminent betrothal – her hand in marriage offered as the prize in a challenge between the clans – Merida rebels, setting in motion a series of events both humorous and poignant as she and her mother, Queen Elinor (Thompson) are forced to work together to set things right.  Thus begins their adventure into seeing the world through each other’s eyes.

King Fergus (Connolly) perfectly cast and voiced, infuses the film with incorrigible humour delivered in his jovial Scottish brogue and there are some great ‘laugh-out-loud moments’ for both kids and grownups alike.

The Verdict>> Yet another brilliant and funny film from Pixar.  Not too many “airy-fairy-scary” bits to scare the littlies and a really great family oriented message for both parents and kids, particularly the 8-12 year olds.

Some extra bits to know about the film and to look out for>> This film marks the first time a Pixar produced film has a female protagonist.

The original title of the film was “The Bear and the Bow”.

Originally 80% of the film took place in snow. When director Brenda Chapman left the project so did much of the white stuff.

The Pizza Planet truck, a fixture of every full-length Pixar film except The Incredibles, can be spotted in the Witch’s Hut.

None of the footage shown in the preview trailer is in the finished film.

This is the first Pixar film to be a period piece.

Princess Merida is the first Pixar character to be included in the Disney Princess line.

The Review>> This year sees a wealth of family films coming out for the holiday season and kicking it off is a lovely little Christmas offering from Sony. Arthur Christmas brings together a pretty awesome who’s hot from the UK in the film scene with brilliant performances from McAvoy, Laurie, Broadbent and Nighy. There are plenty of laughs and the computer generated animation is brilliant to watch in 3D.

The storyline is exactly what you would expect from a Christmas family film, so no surprises there and hence it won’t tax your mind too heavily. I did find myself drifting off at times but then again it was a Sunday morning. Being that this the first film made by Aardman in partnership with Sony Pictures Entertainment, it brings forward the potential of some great family animated films in the future. Of most people might know that Aardman Animation are the crew that brought us Wallace and Gromit and also do Shaun the Sheep. (Who plays a very small cameo in this film) Their British humour shines deeply throughout the film. With some great comedic dialogue that doesn’t rely on the typically American set up and punch-line formula.

The kids will love it, and the adults will still have a pretty good time too. This is the second consecutive film written by Peter Baynham to have the name Arthur in its title, the first being Arthur starring Russell Brand. I am not sure if that will actually enthuse you about this film as the other one was a little average.

The Verdict>> A good solid family fun time at the movies with loads of laughs and heaps of fun characters.

You’ve Been Trumped Movie Review

You’ve Been Trumped
Releases: 6thDecember 2012
Rating: PG –Contains Low level offensive language
Duration: 95 minutes
Genre:  Documentary
Starring: Michael Forbes and Donald Trump
Director: Anthony Baxter (Debut)
Reviewer: Di Campbell
The Premise>> In this David and Goliath tale for the 21st Century, a group of proud Scottish homeowners take on Donald Trump, as the tycoon prepares to destroy one of Britain’s last stretches of coastal wilderness by building a luxury golf resort. As the locals make their last stand in the face of security harassment, legal threats and the cutting off of water and electricity supplies, director Anthony Baxter is thrown in jail as he seeks out the truth.
The Review>> To say the least, the picture painted of Donald Trump in You’ve Been Trumped is not so pretty. Not only are we shown many unflattering literal paintings of the businessman in the film, but he also does a very good job of painting his own caricature of a vain bully, bulldozing a small Scottish community in the pursuit of a his own vision: a new high-end golf course.
The documentary provides a David and Goliath type battle.  Whilst Goliath takes the form of money and celebrity in Donald Trump, the role of David is played by a small Scottish community Aberdeenshire – in particular a farmer named Michael Forbes – local hero to his supporters, but branded by Trump as the village idiot.  Money talked in this battle, however, with the development of the golf course given the go ahead despite opposition from locals, some politicians and environmentalists.  In some rather ugly scenes the ‘battle’ turned particularly ugly with an arrest of film-maker Anthony Baxter and the cutting off of water and power supply for some local residents.
This is the film making debut of Anthony Baxter.  His simple telling of the story comes as a series of interviews with locals, politicians and scientists.  Alongside this, the film documents the destruction and manipulation of the environmentally unique dune system.  In what turned out to be a more confusing than creative move, Baxter included clips from the 1983 film ‘Local Hero’, which has the theme of wealth versus community.
The Verdict>> You’ve Been Trumped manages to be a doco which is both as revealing and disturbing as it is heartwarming and amusing.  I doubt anyone will never watch ‘The Apprentice’ in the same way again.
Some extra bits to know about the film and to look out for>> When it was announced that the documentary was to be given its UK television premiere on BBC Two on 21 October 2012, Trump’s lawyers contacted the corporation to demand that the film should not be shown, claiming that it is defamatory and misleading. The screening went ahead; the BBC defending the decision and pointing out that Trump had refused the opportunity to take part in the film.

Katy Perry Part of Me DVD Review

Katy Perry Part of Me
Releases: 7thNovember 2012
Rating: PG – Contains coarse language
Duration: 90 minutes
Genre:  Documentary
Starring: Katy Perry, Adam Marcello and Casey Hopper
Directors: Dan Cutforth, Jane Lipsitz
Reviewer: Jon E Clist
The Premise>> Katy Perry is living proof that if you just be yourself, you can be anything! Get an inside look into the real Katy Perry and find out how this regular California girl with big dreams became one of the biggest stars in the world. This “fascinating glimpse at an inspiring story” is your chance to experience Katy Perry’s teenage dream come true!
The Review>> Okay so not only is Katy Perry stunningly beautiful but talk about super catchy songs. This girl is dangerous! I certainly can’t help but sing along to her songs when my daughter makes me listen in the cd in the car… okay so it might be my choice to put that cd on, but let’s keep it between you and I.
I think despite liking her music, in my mind I really wanted to find this movie shallow and boring. I wanted it to be just purely a polished pop concert with smiles and makeup with happy people who look like it’s so easy to be famous and popular. However, this film took me by surprise in so many ways. One me which is how open and vulnerable Perry let’s herself appear on the big Screen. I could help but get watery eye syndrome at the scenes surrounding the completely emotional turmoil that she faces at the break up me her marriage to English comedian Russell Brand. It’s real and so very raw, and at times you could help but feel as though we were intruding on her pain like voyeuristic vultures. Of course we weren’t gate crashing vultures, we were invited guests.
The 3D best comes to life during the live performance clips and helps to demonstrate just what a huge spectacle a Katy Perry show really is. However in the rest of the film it is kind of pointless. That is kind of most 3D in movies has become, pointless effect bridging moments of visual brilliance. I sometimes think that perhaps it should be done like some of the kids 3D films in the past where you are prompted during the movie to put your glasses on and them take them off again when not needed.
Another really nice element to the film is how you get to see just how much of a priority Perry makes of her fans. You get to meet her sister who works as a kind of fan liaison. At various times in the film we see her getting out amongst the fans and pulling them into this whirlwind of a world that is the Katy Perry live show. At these points you really get to see just how wide and devoted her fan base is.
The Verdict>> A really good pop music documentary that will certainly give you a greater insight into one of the biggest ladies of pop. It’s actually really enjoyable…
Some extra bits to know about the film and to look out for>> This film received a PG rating, making it the second film from MTV Films to receive that rating after Napoleon Dynamite, and the first documentary film from the studio to do so.
Ke$ha, who appeared in Katy’s 2008 hit music video for “I Kissed a Girl,” can also be seen in some of the pictures shown of Katy and her friends.
